Chic a valer! Francesi e francofili in due romanzi di Eça de Queirós

The long and varied sojourn in France of José Maria Eça de Queirós (Póvoa de Varzim, 1845 - Paris, 1900), characterized initially by intermittent visits and then turning into his permanent residence from 1888 until his death, has led many scholars to critically elaborate on the theme of France within the writer's narrative production. The vastness of the topic, however, constantly opens up new avenues of study, and one of them, which I am going to analyze in the present work, is that of the creation of characters who are French or who, although of another nationality, translate, on a literary level, the author's thoughts on France. To this end, my corpus will consist of two novels: Os Maias, where the transalpine country is constantly evoked, and A Cidade e as Serras, the first half of which is set in Paris.

Il lungo e variegato soggiorno in Francia di José Maria Eça de Queirós (Póvoa de Varzim, 1845 – Parigi, 1900), caratterizzato inizialmente da visite intermittenti per poi tramutarsi nella sua residenza fissa dal 1888 fino alla morte, ha indotto molti studiosi a elaborare in chiave critica il tema della Francia all’interno della produzione narrativa dello scrittore. La vastità dell’argomento, tuttavia, apre costantemente nuovi percorsi di studio e uno di questi, che mi accingo ad analizzare nel presente lavoro, è quello della creazione queirosiana di personaggi francesi o che, sebbene di altra nazionalità, traducano, sul piano letterario, il pensiero dell’autore sulla Francia. A questo scopo, il mio corpus sarà costituito da due romanzi: Os Maias, ove il Paese d’Oltralpe è costantemente evocato, e A Cidade e as Serras, la cui prima metà è ambientata a Parigi.
