In May 2024, the European Union will go to the polls again. For some time, however, the legitimacy, democratic nature and representativeness of European elections have been questioned, mainly due to the low turnout of eligible voters, the lack of uniform and binding electoral rules for all member states, and leading candidates for the top posts of the European institutions who are only visible and eligible in their home countries. A proposal for the reform of the European electoral system, for the time being approved by the European Parliament and being examined by the Council, attempts to remedy these problems by means of a comprehensive amendment of the electoral rules, which, if approved, could in fact initiate the construction of a common European space and a system of parties and definition of interests on a European scale at last, and no longer restricted to the national level alone.

Abstract
In May 2024, the European Union will go to the polls again. For some time, however, the legitimacy, democratic nature and representativeness of European elections have been questioned, mainly due to the low turnout of eligible voters, the lack of uniform and binding electoral rules for all member states, and leading candidates for the top posts of the European institutions who are only visible and eligible in their home countries. A proposal for the reform of the European electoral system, for the time being approved by the European Parliament and being examined by the Council, attempts to remedy these problems by means of a comprehensive amendment of the electoral rules, which, if approved, could in fact initiate the construction of a common European space and a system of parties and definition of interests on a European scale at last, and no longer restricted to the national level alone.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
