The new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum represents a set of rules and strategies that aspires to establish a fairer, more ef icient and sustainable governance of migration phenomena and the granting of international protection. In reality, an examination of its contents shows how the current European approach to migration, as well as that of some States on the old Continent, is declined in purely securitarian terms, focusing mainly on strategies tocontain entry onto European territory, and to externalise the procedures for examining applications for protection. This contribution illustrates the salient points of the European strategy on migration and asylum, then highlights the problems of its implementation at both political and legal levels, concluding that such an approach ultimately risks proving inef ective and counterproductive.

Abstract
The new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum represents a set of rules and strategies that aspires to establish a fairer, more ef icient and sustainable governance of migration phenomena and the granting of international protection. In reality, an examination of its contents shows how the current European approach to migration, as well as that of some States on the old Continent, is declined in purely securitarian terms, focusing mainly on strategies tocontain entry onto European territory, and to externalise the procedures for examining applications for protection. This contribution illustrates the salient points of the European strategy on migration and asylum, then highlights the problems of its implementation at both political and legal levels, concluding that such an approach ultimately risks proving inef ective and counterproductive.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
