Democracy, and liberal democracy in particular, does not seem to enjoy good health in our times. And yet the archaic definition given by old Winston Churchill remains true: 'the worst form of government except for all the others'. Hence the need, in order to avoid the 'decline of the West', to rebuild some form of social consensus, based on common ideals recognised by all. The undertaking is not easy. It can be approached, however, by acquiring an awareness of the plurality of values, which consists, above all, in the realisation that those at the basis of today's crisis-ridden democracies are not the only values, that there are others which, misunderstood, could lead to the unstoppable decline of our institutions, until now the guarantors of a minimum of security, freedom and civil coexistence.

Abstract
Democracy, and liberal democracy in particular, does not seem to enjoy good health in our times. And yet the archaic definition given by old Winston Churchill remains true: 'the worst form of government except for all the others'. Hence the need, in order to avoid the 'decline of the West', to rebuild some form of social consensus, based on common ideals recognised by all. The undertaking is not easy. It can be approached, however, by acquiring an awareness of the plurality of values, which consists, above all, in the realisation that those at the basis of today's crisis-ridden democracies are not the only values, that there are others which, misunderstood, could lead to the unstoppable decline of our institutions, until now the guarantors of a minimum of security, freedom and civil coexistence.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
