“La Tragicomedia en verso de Juan Sedeño (1540) y sus relaciones con las ediciones anteriores de la Celestina”

Juan Sedeño’s Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea (Salamanca, Pedro de Castro, 1540), a metrical version of the entire La Celestina, shows a clear tendency to use the same words as the original, which in turn suggested the idea of a study aimed at identifying the original text. Collation with all localized editions previous to 1540 allows us to exclude Sedeño’s having used any of them. Other relevant data are the proximity of La Celestina in verse with the most ancient editions of the Tragicomedia, or closest to the archetype of same, and, consequently, the considerable correctness of the text compared with the errors of the tradition. Furthermore, all the conjunctive errors link the metrical version with the group of the three editions printed in Valencia between 1514 and 1529. The analysis of the variants shows that Sedeño based himself on the subarchetype of this group, a text that occupies a privileged position in the La Celestina dinasty.
