Working within the paradigm of 18th-century language metamorphoses, this essay attends to the transformation of Edmund Burke from speculative philosopher to professional politician, or ‘philosopher in action’. Formerly recognized by Matthew Arnold and Raymond Williams, Burke’s unique contribution to British culture consists of conceiving politics as the difficult art of harmonizing theory with practice. The main focus of attention is Burke’s contrast to the excesses of pragmatism (the greatest fault in British politics, according to Arnold) as they were perpetrated by the first Governor-General of India, Warren Hastings.

Abstract
Working within the paradigm of 18th-century language metamorphoses, this essay attends to the transformation of Edmund Burke from speculative philosopher to professional politician, or ‘philosopher in action’. Formerly recognized by Matthew Arnold and Raymond Williams, Burke’s unique contribution to British culture consists of conceiving politics as the difficult art of harmonizing theory with practice. The main focus of attention is Burke’s contrast to the excesses of pragmatism (the greatest fault in British politics, according to Arnold) as they were perpetrated by the first Governor-General of India, Warren Hastings.File in questo prodotto:
