Edmund Burke’s famous Philosophical Enquiry (1757-1759) on the sublime and the beautiful dates back to the same period as the East India Company’s conquest of Bengal. The work, which made his international reputation, provided also the theoretical ground for his original dealing with colonialism. Against the simplifications of the political world of his time, in more than thirty years of political and intellectual work Burke’s pleas for more humane treatment of Indian natives and attention to their societies and cultures give a fresh view of an author who is still confined in the strait jacket of authoritarianism, especially in Italian historiography.

Abstract
Edmund Burke’s famous Philosophical Enquiry (1757-1759) on the sublime and the beautiful dates back to the same period as the East India Company’s conquest of Bengal. The work, which made his international reputation, provided also the theoretical ground for his original dealing with colonialism. Against the simplifications of the political world of his time, in more than thirty years of political and intellectual work Burke’s pleas for more humane treatment of Indian natives and attention to their societies and cultures give a fresh view of an author who is still confined in the strait jacket of authoritarianism, especially in Italian historiography.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
